Marjatta Metsovaara (1927-) is one of Finland's leading contemporary designer.
She is also one of those three internationally acknowledged Finnish women, who were, in the 50s, both talented textile artists and good businesswomen:
those two other were Armi Ratia (founder of Marimekko, 1952 -) and Vuokko Nurmesniemi (founder of Vuokko, 1964-1988).
Marjatta Metsovaara has been designing and experimenting with fabrics since she in 1954 established her own firm Metsovaara Oy (1954-1990).
She was very advanced textile designer for her time, using non-tradional materials for her art textiles. Today she's best remembered for her beautiful wall-coverings made of partly with traditional materials like wool and linen and partly with plastic- and metal.
At the beginnig of the 60s she made her first modern jacquard collection, beautifully textured with a Byzantine inspiration. Besides traditional woven textiles, Marjatta Metsovaara's design work was concentrated in the 70s on printed cottons.
Metsovaara exhibited in Milan Triennale twice:
in the year 1957 and 1960 (Gold Medal).
